Artist's Comments

Braids NEON is a simple but deep ragdoll fighting game, for one or two players.

The Kongregate version has high scores and statistics now! Try it: [link]

It's on Newgrounds now! You can vote on it there: [link]

I've improved the feel of the physics and added more eye candy. If it lags you might want to lower the quality (press ESC for the menu) and close your other programs.

I've also improved the menu system, finally, but my eventual goal is to make an entirely new version with multiple game modes and levels. I do not plan to continue working on the original Braids however: [link]

I've uploaded a bunch of nice screen shots to my scraps. Take a look: [link]

Updates for February 2008:
- added alerts for damage and combos

Updates for December 2007:
- added ropes to title screen
- improved tutorial instructions
- perfect mouse out detection
- added back button to menus
- increased spotlight speed

Updates for March 2007:
- new music (Rebirth by DarkEpiphone)
- new sound effects (from Plasma Pong)
- improved help and tutorial
- improved AI learning
- increased friction and speed
- bouncy walls and sticky floor
- all of legs now invincible
- ropes fade and background deepens
- added moving spotlights

well it looks a hell of a lot better but I still really don't get how to turn to the guy around or exactly how the attacking works.

You know you wanna click it

Thanks for trying it. You know that I will try to make a tutorial, but let me explain some of the basics.

The main kind of attack is to go towards the other player, and then quickly reverse direction so your legs kind of whip around. If you just slam into them without spinning at the end, you will probably go head first into their pointy arms or legs, which is bad for you.

In general, to spin around, you make a circular motion like you're spinning something on the end of a string. With the keyboard, you go like UP, RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN, Up, etc. to spin clockwise.

Maybe that will help you. :)

I am glad you enjoyed playing the game.

I didn't know I was supposed to use the keyboard.

Hmmmm...well, it certainly looks better, but the figures are way too dark against that background. Also, I liked the preciseness of the other one, these thick limbs kinda threw me off.
I'd keep a deliberate stick figure style, but try to make it more stylized (er, coming from a guy who does stylized stick figures...). The neon-ness looks really good, and maybe some ambient background stuff could work as well.
You know, I have some drum 'n' bass tracks I did for a game we were doing in my game design class that ultimately got rejected, I think they would compliment this sort of visual style nicely. I'd let you use 'em if you wanted, maybe even do more.
Check 'em out:

I like it! It's a bit hard to control, but I understand how hard it is to program it as well. I would, however, still like a few more things from it:

1) An actual attack button. This is my least important concern, because it could be fixed by the next one.
2) Easier controls/bigger screen. I did just say this above, but it would really help.
3) Music! I agree with Kulor- it needs music.

Hello, all. I don't know what to say here, though I will be somewhat boastful, and ask you to please check out my gallery. You just might find something you like! Still, I will not post a link- as I will assure you, it's completely voluntary to look at it

You can use either the keyboard or the mouse. Red is controlled by the keyboard (activated by pressing space) and blue is controlled by the mouse.

The figures are supposed to be dark in this one, so they're just like shadows and you mostly see the glowing braids. Then as the screen gets filled up with ropes, the figures are very distinct and the braids are hard to see.

It is harder to tell what's going on in this one, with the thick limbs and all. So I started with the original style, which apparently doesn't look as cool. I'm not really sure what to do about it.

What do you mean by "more stylized" and also by "ambient background stuff"?

About the music, yes, I was hoping someone could offer me some tracks like those for NEON, since I don't know how to make them. Thanks! :) If you have the time, it would be nice if you could make something a little less syncopated and around 120 bpm (to match the timing of game events). Also, if you could make separate loops that I can dynamically combine with code that would be good - like one or two second loops...

I recorded some of my own loops for the original version, but I haven't yet got them in the game.
